Write a letter to brighten an elder’s day

Everyone deserves a mailbox full of love letters, and we’re on a mission to make that happen– we’ve sent 900,000+ letters of love around the world. So take a few minutes, sit down, and write a letter. Tell them about yourself, maybe share a joke or a riddle and let them know that they are loved.

How to write a letter

It might feel difficult at first to be writing to someone you don’t know. Our advice: just pretend like it’s a conversation! What kinds of things would you want to talk about with a stranger?

Our Guidelines:

1. Letters must be legible (large print), handwritten, and include no glitter. No worries if you’re not artistic– make your card as what you’d like to receive.

2. Avoid religion and controversial topics. Your letter should be meaningful to anyone

3. Embrace creativity! Recipients love it when the letters are personal. We encourage you to make your letters colorful and fun– photos, crosswords, and drawings are great!

4. Be kind & thoughtful. You can include a return address, but please do not expect a reply. We want to ensure recipients don’t feel burdened by the need to reply.

Fulfill March letter requests

Read this month’s bios and choose which of our elder(s) you’d like to write. All letters should be stamped and mailed with love by March 31, 2026. New elders are shared on the 1st of every month!

Pro tip: These addresses will be taken down at the end of the month, so address your envelope before you start your letter.

Note: We’ve shared these addresses early, so if you need last month’s letter requests, view them here.

Let’s celebrate spring: We’re sharing 6 letter-writing prompts to help your letter(s) bloom with warmth and cheer!

Mary

A note from Mary’s Niece: Mary is originally from Syracuse, NY, and now lives just outside of Indianapolis. She lives alone and never married or had children of her own, but she has always loved and treated me like her own daughter. Mary has a huge heart, especially when it comes to animals. A few years ago, she rescued a senior cat from the local Humane Society, wanting to give her a chance at a loving home in her final days. They have brought each other so much joy, comfort, and companionship. Mary also faces ongoing health challenges. She suffered a heart attack about eight years ago, and her health has declined since then. Mobility is a struggle, and chronic pain is part of her daily life — some days making it difficult to even get out of bed. Despite all she endures, Mary remains incredibly positive in spirit. She would truly love receiving encouraging and uplifting letters.

Ed

A note from Ed’s caregiver: Ed lives in NY with his two cats and has a real love for receiving letters. A lifelong stamp collector, his collection is huge. In his free time, he tends to his garden, where he grows impressively large bok choy alongside a variety of other vegetables. He also enjoys feeding the neighborhood birds and watching them gather outside his window. His whole day brightens when someone comes to visit him. He absolutely loves to feed people, too. He considers himself both a nature enthusiast and an animal lover, with a special fondness for ferrets. Lately, he’s been navigating the challenges that come with aging and the limitations it brings, but when I asked if he’d like to receive letters from people around the world, his eyes lit up. For the first time in a while, he spoke with real excitement. It was a beautiful reminder that even the simplest gestures can bring deep joy.

Mila

A note from Mila’s granddaughter: Mila is 81 and has spent her entire life caring for others. She worked as a nurse until retirement and dedicated years to medical missions in the Philippines, where she also supported local orphanages. She’s been a widow for almost 30 years and, despite living with depression, still volunteers with a suicide prevention hotline to help others feel less alone. After recent shoulder surgery, she can no longer drive or go out, so she now spends most of her time at home. She has also survived breast cancer and spine surgery—always with quiet strength and compassion. A bundle of kind letters would mean the world to her and would be a beautiful reminder that the love she’s given so freely is coming back her way.

Anne

A note from Anne’s sister: In 2020, we moved from Colorado to South Carolina, and since Anne has some special needs/disabilities, making new friends has been hard. The past few years have been very difficult because we lost both our parents but thankfully we have each other. I know she would love to receive some letters, pictures or cards, or have a regular penpal. Anne loves to read and is interested in dinosaurs, constellations, planets, states, travel, history, animals, Jim Henson’s muppets, weather events, and all things Disney including all Disney characters, movies and going to Disneyworld.

Sue J.

A note from Sue’s daughter-in-law: Sue is in her 90s and is a retired surgical nurse, a profession she was and is very proud of. Sue is extremely passionate about all things K-State. She also follows the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. One of her biggest interests is her family genealogy. She even has some newspaper clippings and documents her mom saved. She doesn't get out a whole lot due to mobility issues and the fact that she is the primary caregiver for her husband, who has dementia. Receiving some happy and encouraging words would definitely put a smile on her face and brighten her day.

Phillip

A note from Phillip’s granddaughter: Phillip is a grandpa who loves swim days and hanging out with his grandkids, especially during the summer months. He grew up in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and now lives in St. Louis, Missouri, where he enjoys quieter days filled with old cowboy shows and the occasional chess match. Once school starts and the grandkids get busy again, things can get a little lonely for him living on his own. That’s why a bundle of thoughtful letters would mean so much—just a small way to remind him he’s loved and not alone.

Pam

A note from Pam’s cousin: Pam celebrated her 80th birthday and lives alone in Kentucky. Several of her close friends have recently passed and I can hear the loneliness growing in her voice. She loves reading and walking to her local library. Pam is very worldly from reading and would enjoy getting cards and letters from across the United States and around the world. It would really brighten her days!

Frank

A note from Frank’s friend: Frank was born in Lima, Ohio, the youngest of three boys, in 1932. He is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and proudly served in the US Army. He was quickly promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Frank married Joan and they became the loving parents to three children. Frank and I met in 1989 through our mutual work collaborations and became lifelong friends; a friendship that spanned decades of wonderful times together. My children call him Uncle Frank. He is now 90 and not in the best of health. He currently lives alone in Pennsylvania, and would be so pleased to receive correspondence to help fill his lonely days, to add a sparkle of cheer, as he experiences the waning days of his life.

Bob

A note from Bob’s granddaughter: Bob recently lost his wife of 68 years in January. Living in a small Nebraska town, they raised two sons. Tragically, one of their boys suffered a severe accident at just 19 years old. With unwavering devotion, they cared for him at home until his passing at the age of 38. Today, Bob is a grandparent to two granddaughters and two great grandchildren, who visit as much as they can. Bob is a retired accountant; he loves traveling to Arkansas when he can, chatting over coffee and cookies with anyone and everyone! These days, he doesn't get as many visitors and would be overjoyed to receive kind words and well-wishes from thoughtful people across the country

Shirley

A note from Shirley’s great granddaughter: Shirley recently moved into a new elderly home after living in her home for 50 years. This transition hasn’t been easy, and she can get lonely since she doesn’t have many visitors. She truly deserves letter bundles to bring her comfort, encouragement, and joy. They would remind her how loved and appreciated she is and help brighten her days as she settles into this new chapter.

Sue L.

A note from Sue’s daughter: Sue has progressed dementia but doesn't realize it. We recently moved her out to live in an assisted care facility in Washington and she left her farm of over 40 years. She's having a hard time adjusting to the move and misses receiving as much mail as she used to. I'm hoping that receiving some letters in the mail from kind strangers will brighten her spirits and she can pin the letters to her cork board to read over and over again. She has three cats named Vince, Missy, and Nocci who she loves. She was an avid cook but it's no longer safe for her to be in the kitchen without supervision. She loves fishing and the outdoors but that has become harder for her to participate in with her recent health struggles.

Judy

A note from Judy’s son: Judy grew up really quickly and had to help raise her 3 younger siblings, so she missed out on a lot that life has to offer. She married her husband at a young age before having children around 30. Judy had twins. She spends most of her time with her only grandson who is 4. She enjoys watching birds play outside and watching TV. Myself, my sister and her son stay together with my mom and we find that this helps us stay really connected. Judy was born in 1958 and enjoys the holiday season most. She enjoys country music and country cooking. Please help us fill her days with positive letters of love!

MaryAnn

A note from MaryAnn’s niece: MaryAnn was born in 1941 in South Bend, Indiana, and later built a beautiful life in Bloomington with her beloved husband, Bill. Fifty years of marriage is a remarkable blessing. MaryAnn is especially close to her brothers, even in difficult seasons. The comfort of siblings who stay connected and reach out with care is a rare and precious gift. For many years, MaryAnn worked at the Catholic gift shop, offering kindness and warmth to everyone who walked through the door. After her first stroke, she faced unexpected challenges that required tremendous strength and patience, and she met them with courage and determination. This second stroke has made this season of life more demanding, and being homebound and using a wheelchair is not easy. The love of her family, even when miles make visits less frequent, reflects the beautiful life of love she has built over the years. MaryAnn is cherished not only for all she has done, but for who she is. These letters will bring her comfort, moments of peace, and a gentle reminder that she is deeply loved.

Roxie

A note from Roxie’s granddaughter: Roxie is an avid reader, but with age cataracts have taken her sight so she now enjoys cassette audiobooks when able. Roxie enjoys western movies and shows where good always triumphs over evil. She is also a former baker/cook that loves to experiment in the kitchen and find new food combinations. You can often find Roxie enjoying some board games, especially the game of 'Sequence,' or alternatively, watching the birds outside her window. Roxie is now 90 years old and her husband of 70 years passed away last year. Roxie has been adjusting to life on her own, now in an assisted living facility, away from the house that she lived in for 50+ years, meaning lots of change. Her spirits are lower and receiving mail is a genuine bright spot and highlight in the day for Roxie. Please shower her with love and letters.
