Write a letter to make an elder smile

Everyone deserves a mailbox full of love letters, and we’re on a mission to make that happen– we’ve sent 750,000 letters of love around the world. So take a few minutes, sit down, and write a letter. Tell them about yourself, maybe share a joke or a riddle and let them know that they are loved.

How to write a letter

It might feel difficult at first to be writing to someone you don’t know. Our advice: just pretend like it’s a conversation! What kinds of things would you want to talk about with a stranger?

Our Guidelines:

1. Letters must be legible (large print), handwritten, and include no glitter. No worries if you’re not artistic– make your card as what you’d like to receive.

2. Avoid religion, if possible. Your letter should resonate with anyone.

3. Embrace creativity! Recipients love it when the letters are personal. We encourage you to make your letters colorful and fun– photos, crosswords, and drawings are great!

4. Be kind & thoughtful. You can include a return address, but please do not expect a letter back. We want to ensure recipients aren’t burdened by feeling obligated or unable to respond.

Fulfill February letter requests

Read this month’s bios and choose which of our elder(s) you’d like to write. All letters should be stamped and mailed with love by February 28, 2025. New elders are shared on the 1st of every month!

Our national holiday, Letter to an Elder Day, is on February 26! Please celebrate by writing a letter to an older adult on or around the day, and sharing your letter using #lettertoanelderday

Elsie

A note from Elsie’s grandson: My grandma loves botany and all things flower. She is also very talented at sewing, constantly fixing all of our clothes. She’s a lovely, stubborn, lady who’s also an amazing story teller. She grew up near the Maryland/Delaware border and now lives in New York with her family. She deserves a letter bundle because she is the strongest woman I know and she deserves to feel loved as a 90-year-old woman.

Tony

A note from Tony’s granddaughter: My grandfather is from Panama and he is a U.S. military veteran. He was a sergeant and saw many of his soldiers come and go. He has worked hard to bring his family to this country, which is why I am here today! He is suffering from a mild case of dementia and his age is slowly getting to him. But nonetheless, he is still upbeat and tries to make us laugh as much as he can. He has always provided love, support, and great advice and I want to return that same energy to him. I have given him many gifts, but if it would brighten his day, and mine to see him receive love. He speaks Spanish as well so letters in his first language would be awesome!

Lucinda

A note from Lucinda’s daughter: My widowed mother is in her mid 80's. Lives in her own home with assistance of nearby family. She lives with chronic pain and very limited mobility. She is no longer able to drive to attend church or visit friends. Though family checks in with her regularly the days are long and lonely. She enjoys rural living, has a wealth of knowledge of farming, animals, gardening, nursing and child rearing. Her faith in God is firm and I believe she would greatly benefit from kind words from caring people.

Colleen

A note from Colleen’s granddaughter: My grandma just turned 87 and she is one of the strongest women I know, both physically and emotionally. She is the oldest of 9 children raised in a small 4 room, country, farm home in Southern MN. Raised during the end of the great depression, she’s had her struggles, and recently because of her eyesight has had to lose her independence with driving and enjoying things she used to. Through all of life's challenges she pushes on and continues to be a woman of strength, faith, bravery, love and inspiration. My beautiful Grandma deserves to be loved on after all she has done and continues to do for others.

Della

A note from Della’s granddaughter: My grandmother has Alzheimer's and does not remember much anymore. She used to be a school teacher for elementary school kids and loves teaching people. From a young age she would run little "schools" for the neighborhood kids. She enjoyed sewing, reading and puzzles, but now does not do much of anything. Receiving your letters would really brighten her day.

Gerald & Brenda

A note from their daughter: Gerald was an engineer/pipefitter on nuclear power plants in the 70's and superintendent. He loves music like Elvis, the Everly Brothers and Jerry Lee Lewis and he has played drums in the past. He loves bird watching and traveling. Brenda was a welder in the 70's and has owned her own restaurant on the coast of NC during the 90's. She has a big crazy family, full of fun stories. She used to travel to the mountains and is familiar with country living. She enjoys Patsy Cline, Elvis, and Tanya Tucker. They met at a town dance after first seeing Gerald work at the local candy shop, he was mixing chocolate and she knew he was for her. She's every bit of a Leo with a boisterous and fun attitude. He's a jokester and loves to laugh at witty jokes. They’ll love your cards!

Linda

A note from Linda’s friend: Linda’s wife Cilla passed away last February after several years of declining health. Cilla and Linda had been married for several decades and they were each others’ soul mates and best friend. Linda has been very sad and lonely as she doesn’t have much family around and each holiday, season change and anniversary is hard on her without Cilla. Linda's favorite holiday is Christmas and anything winter or holiday related brings her joy. Her house is decorated in Christmas year round. Linda is also a retired special education instructor and loves kids and helping them. She would be overjoyed to get some letters and know that people are thinking about her to help her not feel so alone in this world without her life partner.

Edna

A note from Edna’s daughter: My mom is 87 years old and lives alone. My mom did not have an easy life, but she always remained single and supportive of her own children and then put herself through college to become a nurse. She cares for other seniors in her building and refuses to see herself as old. One amazing gift that my mother has done is hand stitched (petit point) amazing, intricate pictures for each of her children, their spouses, and each of her grandchildren. She continues to stitch these gifts (each one taking at least a year, sometimes more, despite the pain and awkwardness of the fingers on her stitching hand. But she’s very lonely. This saddens me as I live 9 hours away and cannot always be with her. She has always given so much to others and I would love her to receive these letters and show her that she is deserving of peoples love and respect.

Robert

A note from Robert’s granddaughter: My grandpa has been living with my parents and I for the past two years or so. My grandma, Ruth, sadly passed away about a decade ago so he's been on his own ever since. Recently I've started college two states away and feel worried that he might not have as much communication as he did before. He was also recently in the hospital for RSV, and is temporarily in a rehabilitation center away from family. He’ll be spending his 95th birthday there (February 1st) so I hope some of these letters might cheer him up! He loves reading, family history and genealogy, history in general, and watches a lot of reruns of M.A.S.H and other various older tv shows. He used to be a math professor and loves teaching about magic squares, he also used to make stained glass artwork and was very proficient in poetry. He’s still pretty sharp, so any witty humor or dad jokes will be greatly appreciated!

Sherry

A note from Sherry’s daughter: My mother is a proud Grandmother of 9 grandchildren and loves to sing and dance, not so easy anymore as she is 81 years old. She loves reality tv, romance and comedy movies, going out to eat, playing a board game or two, and she's a bit of a prankster and loves to joke around. She also knows how to speak Polish. She was born in Madison, WI but was adopted and ended up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has been down in the dumps and lonely since her partner Leo (together 28 years) passed away a couple years back but she always tries to put on a smile. Her health isn't the best and she can't seem to get her strength back while also dealing with some chronic pain. She's a tough cookie though - she's been going to dialysis for almost 10 years due to an autoimmune disease. I know your letters would greatly cheer her up and let her know she's not so alone.

Millie

A note from Millie’s granddaughter: My grandmother Millie, is 98 years old and lives on her own in Hadley, NY. She loves to read her Bible, pray and have visitors. Her husband passed away in 2021. She misses him dearly and since then as you can imagine there is a missing piece of her. She talks of him often. To pass the day she reads, listens to the TV, often older programs like Little House on the Prairie or a Christian program teaching her more about Jesus. She has 3 living children and 7 grandchildren that live throughout the country. She wishes she could be with them all the time. Her favorite time is when someone stops over for a visit or she receives an unannounced card in the mail. She will tell everyone about it and it makes her feel so good.
