Write a letter to brighten an elder’s day
Everyone deserves a mailbox full of love letters, and we’re on a mission to make that happen– we’ve sent more than 1 million letters of love around the world. So take a few minutes, sit down, and write a letter. Tell them about yourself, maybe share a joke or a riddle and let them know that they are loved.
How to write a letter
It might feel difficult at first to be writing to someone you don’t know. Our advice: just pretend like it’s a conversation! What kinds of things would you want to talk about with a stranger?
Our Guidelines:
1. Letters must be legible, handwritten, and contain no glitter. Use large print to be sure your message can be read. No worries if you’re not artistic– make your card as what you’d like to receive.
2. Avoid religion and controversial topics. Your letter should be meaningful to anyone.
3. Embrace creativity! Recipients love it when the letters are personal. We encourage you to make your letters colorful and fun– photos, crosswords, and drawings are great!
4. Be kind & thoughtful. You can include a return address, but please do not expect a reply. We want to ensure recipients don’t feel burdened by the need to reply.
Fulfill May letter requests
Read this month’s bios and choose which of our elder(s) you’d like to write. All letters should be stamped and mailed with love by May 31, 2026. New elders are shared on the 1st of every month!
Pro tip: These addresses will be taken down at the end of the month, so address your envelope before you start your letter.
A thank you from Arlene on her 90th birthday: “It’s so refreshing to know that writing letters hasn’t gone away and that there are so many good people in this world. What a way to celebrate!” Read more
Richard
A note from Richards’s daughter: Richard is a retired dentist who lives in Holland, Michigan and has spent his entire life there. Richard knows everyone in the community of Holland. He still swims some days and takes walks. He taught all of his kids to love the outdoors and he spent many years cross country skiing in the winter and fly fishing in the summer. He also taught us all how to windsurf on Lake Michigan. Richard likes to watch football, read, and just watch the day pass outside. As a dentist, he has always been interested in people’s stories. He loves spending time with family and friends and recalling old times.

Bob & Donna
A note from their daughter: Bob is 98, and is an Army veteran whose life has always centered around faith, family, and service to his community. Known for his positive spirit, when asked how he’s doing, he cheerfully replies, “Awesome!”—and more recently, “Awesome with a Band-Aid,” after being diagnosed with several chronic conditions. He has spent his life giving back to others and now struggles with isolation as many of his lifelong friends have passed on. His wife, Donna, shares his same values of compassion and service, having dedicated her career as a nurse to caring for nursing home residents as if they were her own parents. She has also served in her church for decades through her music ministry and loves to sing. Both Bob and Donna would be deeply touched to receive letters that bring connection, joy, and encouragement into their days. They are celebrating their 63rd Wedding Anniversary this month!

Wilma
A note from Wilma’s friend: Ms. Wilma is a 72-year-old woman who is very dear to the people around her. She is always there for her loved one as a listening ear or providing an endless amount of support, knowledge, and advice. Wilma loves the outdoors and spends most of her time on her back porch with her plants. She is an absolute Mountain Dew connoisseur. She also enjoys reading. Over the last couple years, she has lost access to transportation and relies on family members to assist with this, creating much loneliness and seclusion in her life. I believe her receiving these letters will brighten her day and allow her to feel new connections and support.

Monica
A note from Monica’s granddaughter: Monica is 75 and is the kindest soul. Her son recently passed away at 49 of cancer, only 8 years after her husband passed from the exact same type. After both losses, she's been going through a lot. Monica loves flowers, her soap operas (General Hospital is a favorite), Alex Cross by James Patterson, history, and loves book recommendations. She's a devout Catholic, so prayer cards or words of the Lord are incredibly welcome. Anything you could send, a letter or drawing, card, etc., would brighten her spirits! She's given to others her entire life, and now it's time for her to have something sweet for herself.

Janice
A note from Janice’s granddaughter: Janice grew up in Oregon on a farm and was a strawberry picker before even completing grade school. Later on, she met a man that was drafted to serve in the army in Okinawa, Japan. She paid her way to get to Okinawa all on her own which was the first place she ever moved. She lived there for a few years but ended up back in North Carolina alone. He was eventually able to return back to her and then they got married. Her husband was soon sent to serve in the Vietnam war. Janice had her first son while her husband was deployed, and they named him over a ham radio from Vietnam via morse code. She returned to Okinawa, where she had a second son, and raised them in the base camp. Janice eventually made her way to Texas where she has retired after 82 years of working tirelessly, and is now living her best life by the coast enjoying the beach and living close to one of her sons. She manages a very large garden and loves train rides. She has recently felt the weight of slowing down. She is mentally strong but sometimes feels lonely without the constant drive of work. Please help remind her of her incredible value with letters of love!

Cliff & Joan
A note from their daughter: Cliff and Joan are both retired teachers. They have a combined 50+ years in education. They love to read books and play scrabble. Joan is an artist and loves watercolors. Cliff is a history buff and loves football, especially the Baltimore Ravens. They have been married for over 50 years. Cliff has MS and has been confined to the home since 2019. Joan is able to do some driving on her own locally, but recently has had shoulder surgery and they are both at home for now. While they have a wonderful family and church community around them, I am hoping to show them that all that kindness and love they put into their students is still present in the world today.

Mary
A note from Mary’s granddaughter: Mary is 86 years old and is the cornerstone of our family. She was a nurse for over 50 years; it was her passion in life. She loved being with her patients and helping them. She loves being with her family. She doesn’t drive anymore so that has isolated her a little bit, and she misses her nursing colleagues with whom she used to go out to lunch with monthly. She loves reading and watching her favorite Arizona Sports teams, especially the Arizona Diamondbacks. She loves all dogs and her best friend is her dog Booth, named after the Bones TV character. I know the isolation lately has really impacted her outlook so I think letters would bring a little bit of sunshine to her day.

Patricia
A note from Patricia’s granddaughter: Patricia (Nonna or Patty as family will call her) is a beautiful, funny, and lively woman. Patty grew up in Boston MA, and worked as a tailor. A few years ago, she lost her loving husband whom she shared many years of marriage with. Although her life did change from this loss, she is still the same beautiful lady. A few months ago, the family made the decision to move her into an assisted living facility to allow her to socialize better and be open to gaining extra support. Nonna loves anything purple, baking, and angels! Kind and positive letters would definitely make her smile.

Marcia
A note from Marcia’s grandchildren: Marcia is in her 80s and has touched many lives with her kindness and wisdom. She’s a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and has been gracefully navigating life on her own for almost 40 years since being widowed. Marcia hails from Buffalo, NY and is a huge Buffalo Bills fan. She is known for her incredible cooking—especially Italian dishes she mastered after marrying into an Italian family. She loves a good book, has a soft spot for cats, and spent her younger years sewing, crocheting, and tending to her garden. Lately, Marcia has been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the negativity in the news and could really use help in lifting her spirits.

Sue
A note from Sue’s granddaughter: Sue is 78 years old and was born in Yuma, AZ. She moved to San Diego, CA as a young child with her family. She moved out at 14 years old and became one of the youngest to attend and complete cosmetology school in the state. Sue had a jewelry making business and also managed performers as well. She met and married her husband and began her family in the 80's. She has had her fair share of medical problems along the way. Her husband passed away in 2024 which has taken its toll on her. Sue spends almost all her time home now, but she spent her life taking care of others, so I think these letters would help her to feel loved and appreciated.

Judy
A note from Judy’s granddaughter: Judy is the heart of our family. For years she has organized Sunday family dinner and has hosted all of the holidays. We cherish the relish dishes she creates. When Judy is not hosting dinner, she is part of her local garden club and is an avid reader. She would absolutely love to hear about what you grow in your garden or who your favorite author is. Judy was raised in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Northern California and is a proud daughter of a gold miner. Her pumpkin pie placed 3rd and her apple pie placed 2nd in the local county fair. The best part of Judy is how she stays connected with people. Always checking in on family members and friends to see how they are doing. One of the ways she does this is by sending cards. Nothing can stop her from checking the mail everyday so please help us fill up her mailbox with letters of love!

Vivian
A note from Vivian’s great-granddaughter: Vivian is an incredible 100-year-old who grew up in Minnesota. Vivian has always been creative. She loved crocheting, doing needlework, and working on puzzles before her eyesight made it tricky. She still enjoys reading a good book and spending time with family. A wonderful cook, Vivian is known for her warmth, humor, and strength. She’s lived through so much, including the loss of two sons and both of her husbands, one a World War II veteran and the other a Korean War veteran. She recently found out that her third son, my Grandpa, has colon cancer and is going through chemo and radiation, yet she continues to radiate positivity and grace. Brendan & Mary
A note from their daughter: My mum and dad are 78 and 79 years old and live in Cork (a City in Southern Ireland). My mom loves gardening and my dad loves to watch Sky News and CNN. Recently, their only son moved to Texas and will be there for the next 5+ years so they are really lonely and could use some letters of love. They had hoped to visit Texas but due to declining health, they are unable to travel so I thought why not bring a bit of America to them via a letter bundle!
