Linda and Joe

Many remember stories from when they were younger about their family members - whether it was about your aunts, uncles, or grandparents. There are memories that will always be there, no matter what, and they will be stuck with you forever. I have memories like this of my grandparents as well. My grandparents are loving as can be. They would always treat my sisters and I by taking us to the boardwalk and allowed us to stay at their house whenever we wanted. They filled us with unconditional love, and showed us what it is like to value family and have respect.

As I think back in time, I imagine my sister and I staying at my grandparents’ house for the weekend. I was probably about 6 or 7, and it was the summertime. The weather was beautiful; the sun beamed down on us, and the birds sang loudly throughout the neighborhood. On this day, we decided to go to the boardwalk. Our grandparents always took us to the boardwalk when we went to their house, and we'd first stop at a store to pick up some water balloons for our water balloon fights that they would participate in too. My sister and I would gleefully run through the sprinklers, and one time, we ran at the same time through the sprinkler and banged our heads together. As we fell to the ground, our grandparents rushed over in fear. They made us feel better with their love and comfort, and were extremely worried.

Anyone who has met my grandparents can also feel their unconditional love and kindness. They are supportive no matter what, and know how to make my sisters and I happy. They show us how important it is to be kind to others and to love all people, no matter what. My grandparents are short and sweet, but their strength and support shaped me into the woman I am today. They had a gift for showing me how to embody kindness and strength. I learned how to embrace empathy for others, and to always put my family first—at the end of the day, family and myself is all I have.

In today's world, our elder community is under-appreciated, despite the way that they mold us into the people we are today. Our elders lead the way for us to grow and flourish, and should be more appreciated. They are filled with wisdom to share. Our elders are still loved, and maybe this story can convince you to write one yourself, or even make a phone call to show appreciation to a loved one.

They deserve to be acknowledged and loved, just like they all love us.

Samantha likes to play lacrosse. She loves animals, and has 4 dogs of her own! She cares about the health of others, and was always taught to value family. Her education is extremely important to her, so she always tries to do well in school.
