My Papi, My Hero

I was 4-years-old when my parents fled Cuba with my siblings and I. Escaping Castro’s regime, we boarded an airplane to the United States with nothing but a spare change of clothes. At the time, I did not understand how much my parents sacrificed so that we could live a free life in a foreign country. My dad knew no one in the States, but began to work within six months of our arrival. He provided unconditional love and a family environment even though he must have been so scared and alone. With hard work and determination, he provided us with a home, food on the table and all that we needed. My dad made sure that his young children never knew that they had less than other people.

My dad was eventually able to bring my grandparents from Cuba to the States so that they could move in with us. He put three children through college and worked until he was 87-years-old. As an Electrical Engineer, my dad stayed employed with the same firm for almost 50 years. No one could believe that he was still going to work everyday!

My father taught me love, family, perseverance and safety. He taught me to believe in God and in myself. Even after I married and left home, my dad was always there for me, helping me through hard times and offering support in any situation. With him and my mom, I travelled each summer and saw places I would never have seen alone. He instilled in his children to overcome obstacles one by one and to not give up. I live by my dad’s belief that life is to be enjoyed in our golden years.

Three years ago, my dad passed away at 93. Not a day goes by where I don't think about his courage, support and love. I still smile when something reminds me of him. He left a wife whom he was married to for 69 years, 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

My dad was and always will be my hero. As I near my retirement, I find comfort in his belief that there is still much life and love to look forward to.

Thank you, Papi. I miss you every day.
